hi,

I'm trying to follow the procedure on page 13-21 in the 10.2 Backup and
Recovery advanced users guide but i'm running into a problem.


The manual states that the auxiliary instance should be started NOMOUNT,
however when I try to connect to the auxiliary instance I receive the
following error:

RMAN-04006: error from auxiliary database: ORA-12528 (See ORA-12528.ora-code.com): TNS:listener: all
appropriate instances are blocking new connections

How does rman connect to a host in nomount when the listener is blocking
all connections?


Topology:

target is host1  (source)
auxiliary is host2  (destination)
rman is running on host3   (central rman server and houses catalog)



The manual isn't clear where I need to be running the rman commands -
the manual implies running rman from the target ("CONNECT TARGET /;")
but that seems incorrect.  I tried running rman directly from the target
but the connect to the auxiliary in nomount still fails with the same
error (listener blocking new connections).

Any ideas?
